75 YEAR SENTENCE FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING MENTALLY CHALLENGED MAN

By M.L. Havock

A previously convicted sex offender was sentenced to 75 years in April for sexually assaulting a mentally challenged Bowie County man.
Steven Wayne Morgan, 32, must serve at least half the sentence before he'll be considered for parole.
The victim, who has been brain damaged since birth, testified that Morgan threatened to shoot him if he told anyone. But the child-like 29-year-old victim did tell. Evidence collected during a sexual assault examination of the victim showed Morgan's DNA was present on the victim.
The jury deliberated for roughly 25 minutes before finding Morgan guilty of the aggravated sexual assault of a disabled individual. During the punishment phase of the trial Assistant District Attorney Kristian Young told the jury Morgan had received a 10-year probation in 2005 for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old Oklahoma girl in 2005.
At the time of the assault on the mentally challenged man, Morgan was being supervised by probation officials in Bowie County and was supposed to be participating in sex offender treatment, Young told the jury.
