75 YEAR SENTENCE FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING MENTALLY CHALLENGED MAN
By M.L. Havock
A previously convicted sex offender was sentenced to 75 years in April for sexually assaulting a mentally challenged Bowie County man.
Steven Wayne Morgan, 32, must serve at least half the sentence before he'll be considered for parole.
The victim, who has been brain damaged since birth, testified that Morgan threatened to shoot him if he told anyone. But the child-like 29-year-old victim did tell. Evidence collected during a sexual assault examination of the victim showed Morgan's DNA was present on the victim.
The jury deliberated for roughly 25 minutes before finding Morgan guilty of the aggravated sexual assault of a disabled individual. During the punishment phase of the trial Assistant District Attorney Kristian Young told the jury Morgan had received a 10-year probation in 2005 for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old Oklahoma girl in 2005.
At the time of the assault on the mentally challenged man, Morgan was being supervised by probation officials in Bowie County and was supposed to be participating in sex offender treatment, Young told the jury.
BOWIE COUNTY RAPIST GETS EXTRA PEN TIME FOR WITNESS TAMPERING
By M.L. Havock
A man convicted of rape in Bowie County in 1999 got an additional five years added to his 20-year term after a one-day trial April 12.
Patrick Jones, 40, represented himself against seasoned Assistant District Attorney James Elliott. More than a dozen times retired District Judge John Miller warned Jones to stop mouthing off and once he had to be ejected from the courtroom by deputies.
Jones was charged with witness tampering because of a letter he wrote to his victim promising her money and free housing if she would recant. The victim took the letter, which was not the first Jones had sent, to authorities.
In the letter Jones told his victim he would give a place to live "rent free" and "make all your worries go away."
Jones told the woman he would get $80,000 for every year he's been in prison if she would tell officials he is innocent.
Jones repeatedly thumbed his nose at Miller's order that he could not try to re-try the rape case during the witness tampering trial. He claimed she perjured herself and professed his innocence. Since his conviction in 2000, Jones' appeals have been denied by multiple higher courts.
The victim told Jones he needs to quit harassing her and accept responsibility for his bad behavior.
A member of law enforcement showed the jury a photo of Jones taken in 1999 after the rape. His face, cheeks, neck, arms and shoulders were covered with scratches the victim left as she attempted to fight off Jones' attack. During the punishment phase of Jones' trial a witness testified that Jones' DNA matched that collected from a second woman who was raped while Jones was out on bond for the rape he's in prison for now.
It took the jury about 15 minutes to return with a guilty verdict. Jones will have to serve the five years for tampering after he's done his time for the rape.

Pickle Juice Melts Snow? Thanks Jersey Shore
If there ever was a sign that we've had more than enough snow this winter, here it is.
Bergen County, New Jersey administrators found themselves in quite a pickle this winter. With their plowing budget quickly running dry, they've come up with a juicy solution.
Bergen County is just across the Hudson from New York – and despite being among the wealthiest counties in the nation, this winter has busted their budget for snow removal. Road salt comes at a hefty premium, and being only halfway through winter, they've invested in a new, and much cheaper, snow melter: pickle juice. (See pictures of snowstorms hitting the east coast — again.)
While it's unclear if the mixture ever once contained the delectable deli snack, it's a green salty liquid that executives say melts snow and ice just as well as solid salt. And the price can't be beat: the briny mixture costs just 7 cents a gallon, compared to $63 a ton for salt. Quick math works the pickle juice out to roughly $16 per ton, a substantial savings (though commenters on CBS's story seem to think the math is a bit more complicated).
“We actually pre-spray the properties, the sidewalks, the parking lots as a preventative before the snow is uncontrollable,” Bergen County Public Works Director Joe Crifasi told CBS. Bergen County has already used up $3 million of its $4 million snow budget, so hopefully the salty mixture can help them trudge through the rest of winter.
And with all the delis in New Jersey, we're sure they'll have no shortage of their secret snow-melting weapon
